Ken and Amy Tonaki Named 2025 Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educators

We are thrilled to share that Ken and Amy Tonaki have been named 2025 Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educators, as selected by their music education peers through an awards program sponsored by Quinlan and Fabish Music Company.

Ken and Amy’s impact on the Sycamore orchestra program cannot be overstated. Ken began his career in Sycamore nearly 30 years ago, leading the district’s entire orchestra program for grades 4 through 12. His incredible success and dedication led to the expansion of the program and, a decade later, the addition of Amy, who this year celebrates 20 years of service to our district.

Together, the Tonakis have built a music program that far exceeds expectations for a district our size. Under their direction, our orchestra ensembles have performed and presented at state and national conferences, earned multiple IHSA state orchestra championships, and included hundreds of students selected for regional and all-state festivals. Their teaching has inspired many students to pursue music careers as professional performers, educators, and lifelong musicians.

“We are so proud of our music programs here in Sycamore, and the Tonakis are the cornerstone of the orchestra program,” said Superintendent Steve Wilder.  “Amy and Ken are talented musicians in their own right, and they have a passion for sharing their love of music along with the technical skills that enable our students to become both musicians and lovers of music. They are second to none, and we’re thankful that they are being recognized for all they do.”

Ken and Amy were formally recognized on June 13 at a special ceremony hosted by Quinlan and Fabish in Burr Ridge, Illinois. This recognition is a tribute to their tireless dedication, remarkable achievements, and the deep love of music they have shared with our students and community.
